What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Like its name suggests, transponders send out an encoded signal containing a four-digit number code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal, known as a SQUAWK Code, is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to relay specific messages to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to notify controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly used to communicate with ATC in situations where pilots are unable to communicate via radio. They are very important to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar interrogation by identifying a code. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Transponders have several different modes that vary in how they respond to interrogation. Mode A only transmits the code and mode C provides information about altitude. Mode S transponders give more details, such as call signs and position, which can be useful in airspace that is crowded.

For example, the first digit gets an eight value; then every subsequent digit grows by one until it reaches nine at the seventh digit, which then changes to two. Then, the entire VIN will be translated back to its original form by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is the identical to the check digit then the VIN will be valid.
